Iran’s energy mix and electricity mix are not the same chart

A chart showing how Iran generates electricity answers a narrower question than a chart showing its overall energy consumption. The distinction is visible in the US Energy Information Administration’s October 2024 country brief, which presents primary energy and electricity generation in separate rows, with separate units and percentage shares.[4]

Primary energy consumption in that historical table is expressed in quadrillion British thermal units, while electricity generation is expressed in terawatthours.[4] These are different statistical views. A reader should not lift a percentage from the electricity column and describe it as a fuel’s share of every form of energy used in the country.

The report’s discussion extends beyond power stations. It describes petroleum use in transportation and petrochemical production, including uses as feedstocks.[4] Those activities help explain why an electricity-only chart cannot stand in for the whole economy. A fuel can matter to manufacturing or mobility even when its role in generating electricity is comparatively different.

There is also a distinction between production and consumption. The EIA table provides both, rather than treating domestic energy output as automatically equal to domestic use.[4] For a hypothetical producer, selling more energy abroad would not necessarily mean households at home consumed more. The statistical categories must remain separate before any explanation of the balance is attempted.

The practical reading order is therefore title, reference year, unit and denominator. Ask whether a percentage refers to generation, production or consumption, then inspect which fuels are included. The cited brief is a historical methodological example, not an update on current operating conditions, supply reliability or the status of individual Iranian energy projects.
